Buying a Car Online: How to Do It Safely

Online car retailers deliver to your door with a return window. Here is what to check before you click buy.

Buying a car entirely online has gone from novelty to normal. Many retailers offer finance, part-exchange, and home delivery without a single visit.

It can be convenient and transparent — but you cannot kick the tyres, so the details matter.

Check the seller

Stick with established retailers and dealers with independent reviews. Be very wary of private listings that ask for payment before you have seen the car, or that push you to use an unfamiliar escrow or delivery service — a common scam.

Read the listing carefully

  • Look at every photo, including close-ups of any marked damage
  • Check the service history and number of previous owners
  • Run a vehicle history check on the registration or VIN
  • Confirm exactly what is included: spare key, charging cables, accessories

Understand the return policy

Many online retailers offer a return window, often 7 to 14 days or a set mileage. Read the terms: who pays for collection, what condition the car must be in, and how quickly you get your money back. In some countries, distance-selling laws give you extra rights.

Inspect on delivery

Check the car thoroughly when it arrives, ideally in daylight. Compare it with the listing, look for undisclosed damage, check that all warning lights go out after starting, and take a short drive if possible. Note any issues on the delivery paperwork before you sign.

This is general car-buying information, not financial or legal advice. Prices, incentives, financing terms, and specifications change and vary by region — confirm all details in writing before you sign anything.
