“Hybrid” badges cover a range of technologies with very different benefits.
Knowing the difference helps you choose the right car and avoid paying for features you will not use.
Mild hybrid
A small battery and motor assist the engine, smoothing start-stop and slightly improving efficiency. The car cannot drive on electric power alone.
Full hybrid
A larger battery and motor can drive the car on electric power at low speeds for short distances. The battery charges from the engine and braking, so no plugging in is needed. Gains are biggest in town driving.
Plug-in hybrid
A bigger battery that you charge from the mains, offering a meaningful electric range for daily trips. See our plug-in hybrid vs EV guide.
Which suits you
- Mostly motorway miles: mild hybrid or efficient petrol/diesel
- Lots of town driving: full hybrid
- Short daily trips with home charging: plug-in hybrid or EV
