Used Car Scams and How to Avoid Them

Clocked mileage, cloned cars, and fake escrow services catch thousands of buyers. The warning signs are consistent.

Most used car sellers are honest. But the amounts of money involved make car buying an attractive target for fraud, and some scams are sophisticated.

Knowing the common patterns makes them much easier to spot.

Too-good-to-be-true listings

A desirable car priced well below market value, with a seller who is abroad, in the military, or otherwise unable to meet, is a classic advance-payment scam. The seller asks for a deposit or full payment via bank transfer or a “delivery company”, and the car never exists.

Clocking

Winding back the odometer makes a car seem less used and more valuable. Compare the mileage with service records and official test histories, and look for wear that does not fit — a shiny steering wheel, worn pedals, or tired seats on a supposedly low-mileage car.

Cloned and stolen cars

Criminals give stolen cars the identity of a legitimate, similar vehicle. Check that the VIN on the car (usually at the base of the windscreen, door pillar, and in the engine bay) matches the registration documents. Always view the car at the address on the documents.

Outstanding finance

If a car still has finance owed on it, it may legally belong to the lender, not the seller. A history check will usually show outstanding finance.

Safe buying rules

  • See the car in person, at the seller’s home address, in daylight
  • Run a full vehicle history check
  • Never pay before seeing the car and documents
  • Use a traceable payment method; avoid large cash payments
  • Walk away if you feel rushed
